Hypertension, the silent killer, affects more than 45% of adults in the United States, costing the healthcare system more than 131 billion dollars per year (CDC, 2020). In 2017, HTN contributed to over 472,000 deaths. It is reported that only 1 in 4 adults have their blood pressure under control. In the United States an average of 37 million Americans has a blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg. Those most affected by HTN are individuals without healthcare insurance. In this course we will discuss hypertension, symptoms, treatments, precautions and patient education.
At the completion of this course the student will be able to
- Define normal and abnormal blood pressures
- describe risk factors for hypertension
- Identify lifestyle modifications which help control or prevent hypertension
- Compare treatment recommendations for the hypertensive patient
- Describe patient education relating to hypertension
